Being in Russia it is worth tasting some true masterpieces of Russian cuisine: caviar; pancakes, pies with different fillings; traditional soups like schi, borsch and fish-soup; meat, poultry and game dishes like goose served with apples, stuffed sucking-pig; different kinds of fresh, salted and cooked fish: sturgeon and salmon, beluga and herring; beverages like vodka and kvas, and so on. Many restaurants in Saint-Petersburg invite you to enjoy Russian cuisine and exciting folk shows.
I In traditional Russian restaurants you can expect to be offered:
• Appetizers: pickled and marinated vegetables, salted herring, all sorts of aspics and mushrooms;
• Soup: borsch, cabbage and mushroom soups, fish soup, okroshka (kvas soup with vegetables), rassolnik (meat soup with pearl-barley) and soljanka ( soup with tomato paste, pickled cucumbers and a variety of smoked meat);
• Entrees: dumplings, pancakes, pies, duck with apples and sauerkraut, freshwater fish, sturgeon dishes, boiled buckwheat;
• Desserts: kissels, little pies with various stuffing;
• Drinks: vodka, kvas, beer, cranberry and honey water.
Also there are many restaurants offering national cuisine (Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Italian, French, Arabic etc.) The level and price of meals in restaurants vary a lot. Typical middle-range restaurants usually offer dishes from more than one country, for example: pizza, fish and meat kebabs, dumplings.
